When instructing his disciples how to wage war,  Jesus began with the command to 'Behold', to pay close attention, to what he was about to say.  Authorization to tread over serpents and scorpions was given to them; and all-conquering power was given over the power of the enemy.  Going into battle without divine authority and divine power is an open door to defeat.
